Aegis

A name for the shield of Zeus. Homer imagines it to have been forged by Hephaestus. When Zeus shakes it, there is thunder and lightning. It is thus a storm and thundercloud figured as a shield. It is also borne by Athene, daughter of Zeus. See O. Seyffert, Diet.
