Agapetos

There is reason to think that in the times when the Gospels of the New Testament were composed the Greek expression o ayapnros " the Be-loved One " was a standing Messianic title. In this sense it seems to be used sometimes in the Gospels (e.g., Mark i., 11; ix., 7). See J. Armitage Robinson, Ephesians, 1904; Allan Menzies, The Earliest Gospel, 1901.
