Encyclopedia of Religion entry for

Agnus Dei

The words mean " Lamb of God." It is a title of Christ in the First Epistle of John (29). It is also the name of a prayer, beginning with these words, in the Roman Catholic Service of the Mass. It is, further, the designation of medals of wax, silver, or gold, consecrated by the popes from time to time since the fourteenth century, and having stamped upon them the figure of a lamb bearing a cross. These medals were worn as amulets (q.v.).
