Encyclopedia of Religion entry forAlaesiagae Bede Et FimmileneThe names of two goddesses worshipped by some of the Ancient Teutons. In 1883 an altar erected by Frisian soldiers was found at Housesteads in the north of England. It bears two inscriptions, one of which runs : " To the god Mars Thingsus, and the two Alaeesiagae, Bede and Fimmilene." On the sides of the altar is depicted the " figure of a hovering female, with a sword (or staff) in the one hand and a wreath in the other " (Chantepie de la Saussaye, R.T.). citations: Encyc. of Rel., Canney
