Encyclopedia of Religion entry for

A

God A. is a designation used by anthropologists for a deity depicted in the MSS. of the Mayan Indians of Central America. His frequent appearance in the Dresden Codex and in the Codex Tro-cortesianus suggests that he was a god of great importance. He was clearly a god of death and hell, corresponding to the Aztec god Mictlan. His insignia include bells and a pair of cross-bones, and his symbolical bird is the owl.
