Encyclopedia of Religion entry for

All-Saints‘ Day

A Christian festival now held on the 1st of November. It took the place (A.D. 607) in the West of a pagan festival " To all the Gods." Among the Greeks the festival of all martyrs and saints seems to have been observed in the fourth century. It was Pope Gregory III. who fixed the day (about 731) as the 1st of November. Before this it had been the 13th of May. See Cath. Dict.
