Encyclopedia of Religion entry for

Angelic Brothers

A community of Mystics or theosophic Pietists founded by J. G. Gichtel (1638-1710). He was banished from Regensburg, his native place, as an Anabaptist, and went to Amsterdam in 1668. The Gichtelians, as they were also called, neither married nor were given in marriage, and believed they had attained the state of angels. There are still adherents of the sect in Holland and Germany. Gichtel‘s letters, with a biography, were published in 1722 in seven volumes under the title " Theosophia Practice.".
