Annunciation

A theological term for the tidings brought by the angel Gabriel to Mary when she was about to become " mother of the Lord" (see Lk. i.). The festival of the Annunciation is observed by the Church on the 25th of March. It is first referred to in the acts of the Tenth Council of Toledo (656) and of the Trullan Council (692). In England the festival is more commonly known as Lady Day (q.v.).
