Encyclopedia of Religion entry for

Abracadabra

A mystic word or magical formula, used for the cure of fevers and agues. The letters were arranged in the form of a triangle, so that it was possible to read them in many different ways. The square piece of paper on which they were written was folded in the form of a cross. This was then worn as an amulet.
