Encyclopedia of Religion entry forAcca LarentiaA Roman goddess of the earth. She was worshipped as the protector of the seed-corn, the guardian of the crops. It is said that she had twelve sons, and that she observed an annual sacrifice with them. The idea of the sacrifice having been to make the fields (area) fertile, her sons were called Arval Brothers. The priesthood of that name is supposed to have been founded by Romulus who took the place of one of the brothers on his death. See O. Seyffert, Diet. citations: Encyc. of Rel., Canney
