In Chinese religion, one of the chiefs of the Western Paradise, the other being Amitabha. The Chinese Buddhists say that Awalokiteccwara conveys departed souls to Paradise in a ship (" the barge of mercy "). See J. J. M. de Groot, R.S.C.
