Encyclopedia of Religion entry forAccemetaeLiterally " sleepless ones," an order of monks founded near Constantinople during the Patriarchate (A.D. 428-430) of Gennadius. They did not abstain from sleep altogether, but, in order that worship in their monastery should go on uninterruptedly, divided themselves into three " watches," each being of eight hours. A later name of the order was Studites, because during the episcopate of Gennadius a rich Roman consul, Studius by name, built a cloister for them in Constantinople. See J. H. Blunt. citations: Encyc. of Rel., Canney
