Encyclopedia of Religion entry forAbaddonLiterally " (place of) destruction." A term used in the Wisdom-Literature of the Old Testament (Job 26, 6; Prov. 15, 11, etc.) as the equivalent of Sheol, the under-world of the Hebrews. The same word means " perdition" and " hell " in later Hebrew. The term occurs also in the New Testament (Rev. 9, 11), but in this case it is a proper name, a personification, Abaddon being a king or angel of the abyss, whose Greek name is Apollyon (" Destroyer "). See Encycl. Bibl. citations: Encyc. of Rel., Canney
