Encyclopedia of Religion entry for

Balaji

Balaji is the name of one of the modern gods of the Hindus, an incarnation of the Supreme Triad (Brahma-Vishnu-Siva). Sir Alfred C. Lyall states (Asiatic Studies) that he is one of the four most popular gods in the province of Berar in Central India. He thinks that not so very long ago he must have been a notable living man. BAlAji is worshipped on Fridays as the younger brother of Rama by the Dhangars, the Maratha caste of shepherds and blanket-weavers.
