Encyclopedia of Religion entry for

Bar-Mitzvah

Literally " Son of the Commandment," a Jewish designation given to a boy when he reaches his religious maturity, i.e., when he is thirteen years of age. From this time he has to observe the whole Law. The occasion is marked by a special ceremony in the Synagogue at which the boy is called upon to read aloud or chant a portion of the Law, and by a festival in the home. See W. O. E. Oesterley and G. H. Box.
