Encyclopedia of Religion entry for

Caputiati

The followers of one Durand, a carpenter, a sect which appeared in Auvergne in 1182. They were so called from the caps or hoods which they wore. They proclaimed universal liberty and equality; and Durand professed to have received revelations from the Virgin Mary in the light of which he hoped to establish peace in the Church. They were suppressed by Bishop Hugo of Auxerre, who marched against them with troops. See Schaff-Herzog; J. H. Blunt.
