Arabic jadd. If a father die without appointing an executor, the grandfather represents the father. And in making contracts of marriage, the grandfather has precedence on an executor, although the executor takes precedence in managing the property. (Hidayah, vol iv p 555.) In case of the father being poor, it is the duty of the grandfather to act for his grandchild in the distribution of alms &c. (Idem. vol ii p 244.)
