Encyclopedia of Religion definition of

Ordination

Ordination is the ritual where a minister or pastor is vested with the authority to perform weddings and other religious rituals. It is the act of being ordained as a clergy and receiving spiritual empowerment. After completing the ordination ceremony the newly ordained minister is also obligated to promote the beliefs and tenets of the organization that empowered him or her. To ordain is therefore simultaneously an action of empowerment and submission.
